An Heir Returns

An Heir Returns
Coming Home Too Late
Kate Muldoon returns from school after her father dies and discovers that Max Landon has effective control of the ranch. Her inheritance is uncertain because the will has not yet been read.
A Home Under Threat
Kate’s return places her between Landon and the property he wants. She has legal standing as Red Muldoon’s daughter, but no dependable protection from the county’s intimidated authorities.
A Will Delayed by Danger

A Will Delayed by Danger
An Attempt to Silence Her
Landon’s men attack Kate in her Roily hotel room before the planned reading. Del breaks in and stops the smothering, exposing the lethal stakes surrounding her inheritance.
Safety Before Procedure
Kate flees town rather than trust local law enforcement. Her absence delays the legal process, but the delay is necessary while Landon still controls the ranch and can hire killers.
The Heir in Hiding

The Heir in Hiding
A Temporary Refuge
Kate reaches the isolated home of Mrs. Horton with Del, John Smith, and The Kid as her guards. The refuge gives her distance from Landon, but not a solution to the ownership dispute.
Fear and Resolve
Repeated attempts on her life leave Kate sleepless and frightened. Even so, she understands that hiding cannot recover her ranch, and gradually accepts that the conflict must be faced in Roily.
The Will Names Its Owner

The Will Names Its Owner
A Clear Inheritance
Judge Bailey reads Patrick Muldoon’s will, which leaves the land, stock, and cash to Kate. Landon is offered continued employment, but only if Kate chooses to keep him as foreman.
A Conditional Threat
The document grants Landon the estate only if Kate dies. The clause explains his motive but also makes the reading dangerous: legal recognition does not itself force him to relinquish control.
A Ranch and a Marriage

A Ranch and a Marriage
The Claim Survives
With Landon dead, Kate’s title is no longer challenged by the man who had refused to yield. The town’s shift from fear toward action gives her a chance to take possession and begin restoring the ranch.
Shared Work Ahead
Kate intends to delegate ranch operations to a foreman while learning to direct her inheritance herself. Her plans with Del turn the Diamond M from a prize in a deadly contest into the setting for a shared future.
